Why We Chose Filters: The Science Behind The Routine’s SPF 40 Formula

When we set out to create The Routine, we didn’t want to make just another sunscreen. We wanted a product that worked for real people, in real heat, with real skin concerns—especially in places like Dubai, where high UV, humidity, and diverse skin tones are part of daily life.

That’s why we chose modern UV filters instead of mineral (physical) blockers. In this blog, we break down the science and thinking behind that decision—and why it matters to your skin.

What Are Filter (Chemical) Sunscreens, Exactly?

Filter-based sunscreens use organic compounds that absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, which is then released from the skin. They’re often referred to as "chemical sunscreens"—but don’t let the label fool you. Many of today’s filters are dermatologist-approved, safe, and incredibly effective.

Why We Didn’t Use Mineral Sunscreens

Mineral sunscreens (usually made from zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) sit on the skin’s surface and physically block UV rays. While they’re effective, they come with drawbacks that make them harder to wear daily, especially if you have:

  • Deeper skin tones

  • Oily or acne-prone skin

  • Active lifestyles in hot, humid weather

Here’s why we passed on mineral:

White Cast

One of the biggest issues with mineral SPFs is the chalky, grey finish they leave behind—especially on medium to dark skin. That’s simply not acceptable for a product you need to wear every day.

Thicker, Heavier Textures

Mineral sunscreens often feel dense, greasy, or dry. They don’t layer well with skincare or makeup, and they can pill or flake during reapplication.

Poor Humidity Performance

In high heat, mineral SPFs can slide, streak, or feel suffocating. They also tend to mix poorly with sweat and sebum.

Why We Chose Filters Instead

We selected modern, photostable filters that meet global standards for safety, performance, and daily comfort. Here’s what that means for your skin:

Invisible on All Skin Tones

The Routine’s SPF 40 gel blends instantly—no white cast, no residue, no flashback. It’s a game-changer, especially for deeper complexions and makeup wearers.

Feels Like Skincare

Our lightweight gel texture melts into the skin, leaving a smooth, matte finish. It’s perfect for layering, won’t clog pores, and doesn’t interfere with other products.

Made for Humid Climates

Sweat-resistant and tested in the Dubai heat, The Routine stays in place without feeling greasy or heavy.

More Likely to Be Worn Daily

This is the key point: people are more likely to use filter SPFs consistently because they feel better. And consistent use = better long-term protection and healthier skin.

It’s Not Just Protection. It’s The Experience.

There’s no point in having a technically effective sunscreen if it ends up forgotten in your drawer. That’s why we focused on feel, finish, and real-world usability when formulating The Routine.

Because when SPF feels good, looks good, and wears well, you wear it every day—and that’s where the magic really happens.
